Although I have an Acer right now, I'd always recommend a Toshiba.
It's the only brand I've ever used that has never ever crashed on me.
Yes, you don't get many features for your money, but you get stability.

I've just been given a Thinkpad and am something of a convert. They are more robust than a lot of alternatives and seem less likely to fall apart! M.

I am not particularly brand loyal because the quality among manufacturers has merged to the point where most of the major brands are about the same.

They all have good models and bad models. As long as you stick with a major brand, you will get a decent laptop - Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo(IBM), Toshiba

Personally I would avoid Acer. I would also avoid buying any laptops that have an AMD chip instead of an Intel microprocessor. The Intel's typically have more cache which makes a big difference in performance.

I really like Dell laptops for an unknown reason but if I can't have a Dell laptop I would go for HP.

My first one ever was a Toshiba, and it worked just fine, but I didn't use it much and didn't have it long enough to know if it would stay fine.
My second laptop was HP, which I had for 3½ years with absolutely no problems. And it was a workhorse; and I never ever reformatted it, never had to change the hard drive. The backlight converter finally died, and instead of getting a new screen I bought a new laptop, but no HP's were quickly available so I bought a Dell, the one I currently use.

This Dell has worked pretty good, but I have to change the hard drive within a few months, and then reformat it about 6 months later. I'm not a fan of the keyboard layout and functionality, but really, for the amount of work I do it's holding up pretty good. And now that I've said that..... (Murphy's Law, right?)

Apple, but it's not the hardware it's the software. Yes the hardware is nice but there's plenty of nice PC's on the market too.

Basically OSX (and iCloud) do a more seamless integration of my data than a PC with Windows does. This might be different with Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Phone 8 but there's still a few missing links in the chain like my Apple TV and the iPod touch that I've wired permanently into my car so when I'm home, over wifi, it can connect and sync all my music. -- The iPhone in my pocket would do it too, but this was easier on a day to day basis.

Edit: It's occurred to me an Xbox may be able to take the position of the Apple TV. I'm pretty sure it won't mirror my device screens wirelessly though.

I like knowing that all my information is pretty much available on any device I own. I can enter a calendar update on my laptop, it goes to the tablet, it goes to the phone. I can take a picture with my phone, it's on my tablet, laptop, and TV when I get home. I can turn on my TV, I can put any one of my device screens on the TV wirelessly. I don't worry about not having some bit of data with me, whatever device I happen to grab going out the door is going to have what I want.

Can a PC do this? Yeah, you can probably find some 3rd party software to rig it together, but I don't care to mess with the stuff. For me, it's all tools, whichever tool does the job the quickest and easiest is getting my money.
