Elance, freelancer, and other such services are good places to start. You might also consider what are called "pain points" with any products or processes you partake in. When was the last time you said "this is a real pain?" - pinpoint what it was that you were complaining about, invent a product to fix the issue, then make a simple site and sell the product.

It's always easier said than done!

If you are a web designer you could always try your luck out at 99designs for some extra money. Not sure how practical it would be for you but it's just an idea, as it is online and at home.

Sit down and focus on what you want out of the online business and put together a business plan the key here would be research. Always research your industry, goals and the best route to make it happen, if you want to make xxxxx amount per year work out how much you need to make per month and how many clients that would entail. Always keep your goals realistic or you will just set yourself up to fail.

    I am member of Odesk.com but I haven't tried Elance.com.

Very true. If you are trying to find an online job, the competition is really stiff.

To start a business online there are a few factors to consider:

    1. Type of site
    2. Niche competition
    3. SEO strategy
    4. monetization plan
    5. start, maintenance, and growth
    6. scalability
    7. Design and development

Those are only but a few. I've been doing business online for more than 9 years, and I'm still learning.

    Good Luck.

You can build up your profile on freelancer, elance, peopleperhour etc and then start bidding on projects you can easily do. And try to get +ve reviews from the clients. This helps to take bids. communicate properly. Do the work beyond client expectations and within time. Because a client is never for a single project, but he has a series of project.
