    Here is an update

Google will now let any business list products on Google Shopping for free.
Google is making a significant change to its Google Shopping platform by letting any business owner that sells products online list their inventory for free. Usually, an e-commerce operation would need to pay for ad placement on Google Shopping. But the company says it will now let anyone who operates a website or manages a store on a marketplace platform list without paying. Google still plans to charge companies for top placement as promoted listings.

In consideration of the effect of coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown on the businesses and consumers, Google is going to make a major change in its shopping tab in search results. The company will allow the merchants to list their products for free. However, promoted listings or the top placements will still be chargeable.

Google’s move is going to benefit retailers, shoppers, and advertisers too. Retailers will get free of cost exposure to millions of people who search for various types of products on Google’s search engine. Shoppers will get more variety of products than before whereas, advertisers will get the benefit as the paid campaigns will be displayed on the top of free listings.

    Google Shopping officials’ take
Google’s President of commerce, Bill Ready said that they have seen a lot of small businesses and retailers who are ready to provide services but are unable to do so because of budget issues to promote their listings.

By providing them listing for free, Google will help these small retailers in easily connecting with potential customers. This will help small retailers and businesses in boosting their economic growth.

Ready stated that Google was working on the plan for a long time but due to the effect of coronavirus, the company decided to boost the speed and launch the feature as soon as possible. In the United States, the free service to list the products will go live from April 27, 2020.

According to the company, in the upcoming months, the service will be launched for other countries around the globe. All the new merchants can apply to get their listings on Google Shopping for free via Google’s Merchant Center.

As mentioned in the official post by Google, it is partnering with PayPal to let the merchants link their accounts. This is being done to boost the onboarding process and to provide users with the highest quality results.

It is a very good move from Google as the Google Merchant Center is not getting enough paid subscribers after Google made it paid in 2012. Many small business owners can't afford to pay for listing so they left the Google Merchant Center. Now, as google make it free again, it can help the small business owners as well as Google itself as it will gain more user/subscribers. They can earn from those subscribers who are advertising on merchant center with huge product feeds and free access for the small business owners.
