I think a few people have started out on 'free' sites. My hobby blog is on G blogger but my other blog is on paid host now but started free. I did it that way to 'see' how they measured up and enjoyed my experience so now have a paid site. I don't think a charity on a free site will get much attention or trust. A paid host does give a sense of 'value' to a site and benefit of doubt to the owner.

Many times, free and paid web hosting provide the same level of security, network bandwidth, and port speed. The only difference is the inclusion of hosting features. These features include extra disc storage, data transmission, scripting capabilities, more email accounts, and so forth.
If you are a small company that does not need a lot of storage or email addresses, free hosting should work. However, if you anticipate moderate to high traffic, extra features, customer service, and a firm on whom you can trust, then paid hosting is the way to go.
