yes you are right all the inside process like product development and marketing research is included in the marketing section, now a day marketing is not alone a department but its becomes the strategic partner of any firm, because in today environment each and every thing is become customer oriented so no one eles marketing and sales department tell more about the customer needs and behavior about the customers.:)

    Hello Friends,
Thanks for sharing such a useful topic, according to me sales and marketing both are necessities to the success of a business.because if we are talking about the term marketing is everything that you do to reach prospects and if we are talking about sales ,the sales process is everything that you do to close the sale and get a signed agreement and sales process consists of interpersonal interaction.

Selling is the act of persuading or influencing a customer to buy (actually exchange something of value for) a product or service.

Marketing activities support sales efforts. Actually, they are usually the most significant force in stimulating sales. Oftentimes, marketing activities (like the production of marketing materials and catchy packaging) must occur before a sale can be made; they sometimes follow the sale as well, to pave the way for future sales and referrals.

Sales and marketing are closely interlinked and are aimed at increasing revenue.
Marketing and sales functions are diverse yet very interdependent. Typically "sales" cannot exceed revenue objectives without an effective marketing planning and support, and "marketing" directives ultimately becomes useless without sales to implement the plan.

Whilst we shouldn't get caught up in unnecessary semantics and just focus on what works (that is what business is all about). Marketing is a more general thing and can even be at the developmental stage of the business.

The part of your business where you feel you will not be making any profit, not maybe even breaking even but setting up. For some companies that can be the first year for others more.

At that stage you may not even be expecting to make great sales but merely to create awareness of your company/product and give a certain brand image.

You are thus creating the infrastructure and the system from which you will then go on to make sales.

Marketing is the foundation on which sales are made.

It includes identifying the demographics of the market, the product they want etc.

Sales is the more specific act of sealing a deal/sale.

Both require skill, however what I will say is those people who have the natural ability to charm, persuade and sale even if it is on a market stall have a very raw and useful business skill, which some people with their MBAs and theoratical knowledge have not (may never) acquired.
