Google’s in-house incubator, Area 120, is working on a new social networking app called Shoelace which is aimed at organizing local events and activities.

So, do you think Sholace can compete with Facebook and Instagram?

Shoelace is not meant to compete with Facebook and Instagram, it is a paid marketing service from Google for businesses to "tell their brand story with customer journey retargeting" or in other words more marketing buzzword BS. Essentially it is a supposedly AI powered, semi automated ads tool.

Not what I read. It is an events connection scheme where people can list their interests and learn about events that would be relevant to them, Users can also create events. For example, our sewer repair business could have a sewer tutorial session and put it out there. Anybody that loves to be involved in sewer stuff would get notified about the event. Of course a business like ours is a bust on a service like this but it might fit some businesses.

Yes, but people would need to know to look on Shoelace to find events. Google couldn't get Google+ to survive, It expect this to go down the drain as well.
