How can I get started with affiliate marketing and what exactly is it?
Affiliate marketing is promoting other people's products. You generally create a landing page and or sales page that send people to the "product money site" via an affiliate link that the vendor gives you. Sales made from that link are tracked back to you and a commission is paid.
Affiliate marketing can be difficult and it can take time.
The biggest things I have found are to start at problems people have that need solutions rather than with products and try to find the people that need them. For example it is easier to find a hungry crowd and sell them sandwiches than to create sandwiches and walk the streets trying to peddle them.
Find the need, find a high price point product with a good commission base (it is just as easy to sell an expensive item as a cheap one so why start small). Find what the buying keywords in the market are, what the demographics of the market are (google keyword tool and alexa) can give great info on this. See what the offers are, products available, gaps in the market.
Of you can find PLR products and decide to promote those.
Either way you need a site, you need to know what keywords to rank for. You need to know what sales strategies you have PPC or just organic. You absolutely have to build a list for follow-up, to offer great content to and to continue marketing value to over time.
One great strategy is to find something on the market, identify the missing piece or the hole it has and produce a report, video, info product that covers that which you can offer as a free bonus with purchase.

Remember it is easier to ride a wave than to create a wave in a lake - so look for markets where people are already buying, already paying for ads because they are indicators the money is already there.
Hope that helps!

Affiliate marketing is an online advertising channel in which advertisers pay publishers only for results, such as a visitor making a purchase or filling out a form, rather than paying simply to reach a particular audience. This "pay-for-performance" model is in essence the modern version of the "finders'-fee" model, where individuals who introduce new clients to a business are compensated. The difference in the case of affiliate marketing is that advertisers only pay their publishers when the new client introduction results in a sale or a lead, making it a low-risk, high-reward environment for both parties.
Affiliate marketing is a marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts.
Affiliate Internet Marketing is based on cost per lead or cost per sale. It simply indicates that the merchant pays the commission to the affiliate only when he makes a sale through that affiliate. It is one of the successful techniques of Online Marketing as it assures payment on delivery of results.
Affiliate Marketing is a revenue sharing venture between a website owner and an online merchant. The website owner will place advertisements on his websites to either help sell the merchant's products or to send potential customers to the merchant's website, all in exchange for a share of the profits.
To be successful, it is important to create targeted traffic and to present your merchants products in a way that is appealing to your visitors. Selling online is different than offline selling.

Affiliate marketing is a business relationship with a merchant or other service provider who allows you to link to that business. When a visitor clicks on the link at your site and subsequently makes a purchase from the merchant, you receive a commission based on the amount of the sale, a referral fee or a pay-for-click fee"
Affiliate marketing is really about selling products or promoting a product to be sold, and if the product is sold, ie. the buyer buys the product through your affiliate link, you make a portion of that sale.
I made an article about earning money through affiliate marketing. Hope that helps a bit.

Perhaps you can find a product or niche that interests you. It will be much easier to research the product, write about it and to provide customer service to your customers, if you have a genuine interest in the product you are promoting.
It would also be better to promote a product that you have purchased and used yourself, that way you can give real and genuine reviews and recommendations for it. If you purchase a product from ClickBank and don't like it, you can always get your money back, so there is no financial risk to you from buying and testing it.
nice piece of advice Fergal, thanks! I'll keep that in mind, I never thought about it that way. I've purchased many things from the internet that I've used, and I have also sold other stuff before.
