Google always advises webmasters to write great content. They do so because they know readers who use their search engines are looking for information. The better, more relevant information you can offer, the more likely they'll return your site in their SERPs.

Writing great content isn't good only for SEO though. Traffic is what webmasters want. Where they get it from doesn't matter and another great way to get traffic from other places on the net is to have your content shared on social networking sites, forums, social bookmarking sites, etc. Not only would this [sharing] get you traffic, the backlinks you get would boast your search rankings.

How can one write content which readers would be eager to share? Simple. Find out what people are more likely to share with their friends and create such content.

    Examples:

    - people share content which they think others will find valuable.
    - they'll share what they believe others will find entertaining.
    - content which would get people "talking" is shared a lot. . . all people want to do is talk about things after all.

You also have to have some kind of sense of humor in your content as well, it helps people continue reading instead of just stopping at the first sentence. It helps a ton being funny in your content, helps the readers think you're not a robot and actually human, which is a huge plus. :p

You can also take the alternative route: deliberate (mild) trolling.

The Internet is fuelled by outrage and obsession. If you write content that you know will annoy the heck out of a particular group of people, then share it on Facebook - preferably with an appropriately virulent headline - there's a very good chance that it'll get a lot of traffic. People love to get angry about nothing. :)

Very great insights on writing shareable content. I totally agree that content that evokes emotions is bound to be shared as opposed to some boring plain content. It always helps to add some personal touch to it too. Share a bit of your experiences that people can also relate to.
