The search engines want to give the most accurate results possible. Long tail keywords are more specific, and are more likely to give a searcher the result they are looking for. However, from a website owner's point of view, they want more traffic coming to their site, rather than going after a specific customer, so long tail phrases often have less competition. The best keywords are the ones that accurately describe what a searcher is looking for, but also have sufficient traffic to make it financially feasible to pursue them.

Agree, less competition means easier ranking. Or you may have competitors but they are shooting for the higher traffic / more broad keywords which is why their pages are un-optimized for the long tails since they aren't prioritizing that long tail.

Casual search engine users usually type long tail queries in Google. And sometimes those long tail have better chances of converting depending on the field that they are in. So basically, long tail keywords are beneficial in a way that you can get a good number of targeted traffic.

We ideally search something most of the time in the fashion that we speak. There comes in the long tail keyword. If you can tap the searchers way, google would be more happier because of the relevancy.

Agreed that by searching with long tail keywords, chances of getting accurate results are high, which is not possible with two-three phrase keywords. Also, search volume of long tail keywords are low, that also helps in getting fasts rank, obviously with little link building and social sharing strategies.

Long term keywords become more effective after Hummingbird algorithm by Google. As the algorithm was to give the best result for users long queries so targeting long term keyword become a good idea.

Long tail keywords were a "good idea" long before Google's Hummingbird algorithm, for the reasons stated in previous posts. But, Google's Hummingbird algorithm update could now be a reason why they are still a good idea.

The best thing about long-tail keyword is that you can easily understand that what is popular in user. Finally the main aim is to increase conversion rate to make people click and convert every click into revenue. Long tail keyword rank faster because they have less competition and they are more specific

As per as my experience Long tail keywords has less competition compare then to short tail keywords. I would personally recommend to you use query based keywords those appear in blog search term section. These search term are really helpful for you. Because these are originally typed by end user.

The main reason for that is, you have low competition on Long tail keywords. The short the keyword is, the more competition you have to face on listing your page in better place. So, better option is to start with long tail keywords.
