Why are XML Sitemaps important for SEO?
For search engines to crawl the website, webmasters have to show the crawlers the path that would help them crawl the website in a more cleared manner. Hence XML sitemaps are nothing but the path to be shown to the website crawlers.
very well said @ellisthomas86 it is a path that have to be shown to the website crawler. XML site map helps the crawler to find out which pages of a website to be crawled.....thanks
An XML sitemap becomes very important if you have pages on your site created dynamically and if your website is not well structured. It is also important for a website which has lots of webpages.
If your website structure is hierarchly correct, you shouldn't need a sitemap. There should be a link to every page somewhere within the website. A sitemap does become useful to the search engines for very large websites which are constantly changing (eg products and content)
Its "technically" the best way to do it. Every page should be linked correctly and everything found easily by a crawler. However! It doesnt mean you shouldnt use em.
There is NO HARM in using them and in all honesty its more "good practice" to use sitemaps. Not all crawlers out there are very clever. So for the slower ones on smaller engines etc, sitemaps make all the difference.
simple XML file that contains information about one or more URLs on your Web site. The information that is stored there helps search engines better spider your site. All it needs to be is a list of URLs for your Web site
Site map is just like road map; An XML site map can make hits for your site better and more exact when someone searches Yahoo, Bing and Google.
