I'm planning to start a forum. As the title says which is the best Forum Creation tool available under open source? If I first start with free open source then migrate to vbulletin later on when it shows some business. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I know a lot of sites that have used phpBB for years, with the free upgrades and all, running their money making forums on it.

What you could do is try several and see which one you like using.

I would have to say vBulletin and phpBB 3. vBulletin obviously for the paid softwares. Then phpBB 3 being for the free forum softwares. I don't really think you will ever find one better then vBulletin. :)

If you have got the cash, buy it. :)

Paul, there are programs available to switch forums like PHPBB over to VB. You should be able to find them at http://www.vbulletin.com. I haven't used them myself so I don't know how efficient they are. What I would say is that you would be advised to back everything up before you do it and you would need some level of technical knowledge to complete the task.

if you are searching for free options then there are three which you must consider
    1. Simple machines
    2. php BB3
    3. Vanila

In the paid options, I think vbulletin is the best.

vbulletin is with doubt the best in my opinion. If you go bb3 or simple machines as good as they are it may be pain when it come to changing over to vbulletin especialy when you've got a lot of members and threads and post's.

vBulletin is simply the best. That is if you have the money to buy a licence. Unless you have the money, phpBB 3 is the only other option. :)

PHPBB and SMF are probably the most popular free ones out there to use
