I am planning on starting a portfolio website which will show my services and related information on my article writing. I will also be showing my work as a portfolio, so I was wondering which domain extension to use? I would like to use my name as myname.me as it sounds great with the .me extension. However, the .com extension is used extensively and it's also available with myname.com.

I'd say always go with the .com

It's much more common and people are more likely to go to it.

Thank you for your thoughts. I'm still struggling to decide however, so I'll wait for more replies.

I am used to registering .com's but since .me has come online I've always liked to have one. They aren't as popular, but I see more and more designers/coders etc using a .me as their domain extension for their portfolio websites.

Yes, many people do use .me for portfolio's now. But they usually use it for their business so people know about the CEO.

Such as GoDaddy. The CEO of GoDaddy made a .me profile so his customers know more about him. If you're portfolio is just on its own, then I don't think it would be very popular.

.com is better because it is "default" on our mind.
Always go to .com if possible

Ok, thank you for the comments. Thinking about it, I may even register both extensions, just to be on the safe side.

Personally I'd register both of them, but if I had to pick one I'd go with the .com version. When someone hears the name of a site, they will often assume that it has a dot com domain and that's most likely what they will type into their browser when looking for it.

Thank you for your thoughts Fergal and after reading what everyone has said, I guess it's the dot com version I'll be registering.

I would go with both also to be honest. They both have their advantages.

If it's going to be a personal portfolio I would use the .me as there becoming somewhat more used. I would also register the .com so you can use whatever one you want for the main name and just redirect it so people can get the hang of the domain. Thats just my thoughts on the subject though.

I prefer the .com as the .com would be the best choice to get maximum exposure on the world wide web.

I wouldn't rule out .me as of yet, as it has become very popular for campaign domains or social media projects, especially in English-speaking countries.

I have to admit I also tend to prefer .com domain names, however it couldn't hurt to register a .me domain too.

If you were to only get one domain, I would probably go with the .com name. That is the most common one and the one that all businesses use. If you had some extra money, I would go with both. You never know, maybe some day, a .me will be just as popular.

I would prefer .com as it is most commonly used among businesses.. Unless your website is personal you might want to use .me.

I recommend .com since it is much more common and more people will find you "by accident" or if they have been to your website and forget the domain, I think people's first inclination is to type in .com.
