If you are to vote one tool and one only, what would you say has been the most effective tool or method you have used in promoting your web site?

The thing that got me the most members was befriending a number of people and then referring them to the site.

Depends which site to be honest, but the best thing I have done is use social media properly and actually interact with others in similar niches, rather than what some appear to do which is just post links constantly.

Most people won't share this information....:p

I would say blog commenting with the right name for an anchor text for SEO :D
Proper anchor text being the keyword you are trying to get higher in the search engines.

Tough question but I would say giving free information away on my blog and promoting it on Twitter works really well.

I bookmark a mixture of larger sites like Digg and Stumbleupon, bit I also try and user lesser know ones. One of them might surprise me and deliver lots of traffic. Sine of those blinklist or trapit.

This thread is talking about promoting, not seo
By the way, social bookmarking like digg did help in seo too

Very true there. The best thing That I have done to promote my site is by the use of social media, especially Facebook.
I started using Facebook FanPages since late last year. And currently reaching a milestone: 10k fans, it gives me more traffic than usual. In addition to my blog's fan page, I have also been chosen as an admin to other fan pages related to my niche. That way, I can promote to much more wider audiences.

Why won't they share it? Is it really that confidential?

My answer is forum signature. Imagine, if you participate 5 forums, and each forum you make 1000 posting. This result that, you have 5000 posting to promote your site. The higher reputation you have, the more reader click on your signature links.
