Interesting question. I'd say that they will be under pressure now that Apple have entered the market. If the iPad is anything near as successful as the iPod, it will be difficult to compete with it. The iPad will also have a lot of functionality not found on the currently available e-readers.

One advantage that Amazon will have, is the fact that it is being sold directly from their hugely popular online book stores.

The future of ebook readers is... strained eyes and using eyeglasses? :p
Well, it's true since it's really hard to read ebooks on your computer.

I think tis is not so good for ebook readers, there are other pads which are not so light and are more friendly to eyes.. Search on ebay for ebook reader, you will see what I mean ;)

Welcome to Business Advice Forum Lacleve. Which pad or ebook reader do you feel is easiest on the eyes?

I must confess I was not impressed by what I saw of the ipad but I think that is because I am a tech guy and I wanted to see more capability in the hardware used.

In spite of that though, I think that it will be successful and will kill devices like the kindle simply because it also read your mail, surf the web, view MAGAZINES in full color with embedded video. I plan on getting one just to play with and plan to do extended reading on it. I know the argument about kindle's e-ink supposedly being easier on the eyes but still there is no concrete proof of that. Heck I stare into an LCD screen all day long and don't even notice it. (I'm 45 yrs old, BTW)

I see huge potential for multi-function devices like the ipad. Your whole book library only weighs 1.5 pounds now AND can surf the web, read email, and whatever else gets invented for it. How about students? Can you imagine having all your textbooks in that format? (I still have an aching back from my days of carrying 30 pounds of books in a backpack slung over one shoulder....)

Even i feel IPad has lot of disadvantages. The products are not that great. You can get know by the reviews only.

It's a bad way of milking money off from people.

Like most tech products and like most Apple products version 1 will not be to everyone's liking. Version 2 will have updated software and more gadgets thrown in and will increase their sales and decrease sales of other e-book products. I'm lucky enough to know one of the Managers at Apple and met him a couple of weeks back, he reckons that v2 will be out later this year and any bad reviews will soon change.

Another innovation on the run. I never had a chance using any of the Apple tech gadgets but I used to be working on Apple Mac way before. And I found it very user-friendly.

I'm more of Nokia gadgets instead. I have been patronizing Nokia products for quite a longer period of time. N93 is the hottest nokia model I've ever had and still at hand :=D. I don't have any appalling technical related issues with regards to their services (based on my own experience).

More innovations to go from these world's biggies.

My two cents for both of them!

    Gerry

Ebook readers becoming commonplace now and sooner or later coming to dominate the book market, real harm can be done. There are people out there who strongly believe that copyright protection is wrong and feel morally obligated to act accordingly.

Copyright protection is wrong? So it's ok with you if they copy your ideas/articles without your permission and they'll claim it as their own?

    Anderson wasn't necessarily stating that as his or her own belief, but there are people who believe that copyright protection and Intellectual Property laws are wrong, because they feel that it is wrong for someone to claim ownership of an idea. Here's one video that explains their view;

Yup. I know it's not his own views, but that reply immediately comes in my mind, considering what happened to me a week ago...
    Sorry for the confusion...

No need to apologise GekiDan, I understand where you are coming from. I don't like copyright infringement either and I certainly don't like it when it happens to content I've created.

    E readers

With the explosion of tablets at CES 2011, with OLPC getting in on this, with Google going to send out its thin laptop with Chrome OS to it's cloud and with Apple probably launching it's cloud this summer along with it's new offerings with Verizon (and maybe Vodafone at some point), the eBook at the bookstores will be wiped out and Saas will finally come to life this year.
