50Cent are you asking about what skills you need or about something else?

In relation to skills, if you already know HTML and CSS, I'd suggest that you next learn PHP and MySQL.

You just need some good writing skills. That's a good start. If you can't write in good english then you can't start a site or portofolio. The way how you write to your clients or how you write in your site is fundamental.

I didn't say your Grade is bad lol. I just said that to build your portofolio site you need PERFECT English.

Communication with Clients through your portofolio or Instant Messaging is VITAL!

    Cheers

You could start by creating a free blog on something like WordPress.com or Blogger.com and then build from there. Would that approach suit you?

It's funny you should mention that Fergal. I'm in the same position and that's exactly the same conclusion I came to by looking at the most popular Internet skills in demand on job sites.

If your host has cPanel with Fantastico you can install WordPress through cPanel, without needing to upload anything yourself. As you are only starting out you could also consider using the free blog hosting service at WordPress.com. This would allow you to get familiar with the WordPress platform, without needing to upload or install the software yourself.

It's also the next logical step in terms of developing your technical skills, good luck with it.

That's why you should start with the free solution at WordPress.com, it really makes it very easy to get started.

Plus if you have any issues with installing a particular plug-in, post a thread here with details of the error you are getting and one of our members who is familiar with WP will help you.

Try looking into hostway.com. Also, using a lot of text on your site will help bring traffic to your website.

50Cent, if you run a Google search for "wordpress installation tutorials" you'll find
hundreds of guides on how to install a wordpress blog. Or you can go to
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress.

As regards plugins, you will need to upload the plugins to the "wp-content>plugins"
folder and then activate them from your blog's dashboard.

Here is my list of good designing and promotion:

    - Look at competitor sites, how do they match up and what could you do better than them?
    - Look at web designs and get inspiration
    - Create a Adobe Illustrator concept of the site you want (Illustrator allows you to vector logos to scale them, snip images and gradient BGs) Remember, you can always make more than one concept. I do.
    - Try to code the web site as best you can from the concept.
    - Optimize images and load time

    PROMOTION
    - Use Adwords, it is easy to get $100 credit
    - Try local papers, I advertise in a wantads paper, it is 3 dollars for 20 words!
    - Register on forums and build your link
    - SEO SEO SEO
    - Check how you rank with keywords in Google

There you have it, in a nut shell. That is my whole design process :)
