What kinds of websites are going to fare better in the future? As far as content sites, what kinds of sites are going to work better? Just curious here on your thoughts how things have changed and are changing.

It's hard to give a specific answer to your question, since the criteria cannot be specified. What do you mean by "fare better" and "work better"? Are you speaking of their rankings in the search engines, or the amount of traffic and/or conversions? The amount of money they make for their owners? Their popularity in social media? Or perhaps a combination of one or more of the above?
As far as rankings, those that strictly follow the guidelines, and stay informed about what those guidelines are, will fare better over the long term. Of course those who rank for the phrases that have the most conversions as a percentage of traffic will do best. they will also have to reach out to potential visitors using every possible venue.
For content sites, those whose priority is engaging the reader, providing interesting, insightful, and/or helpful information (depending on the type and purpose of the site) will do the best. As with other sites, reaching out via social media will allow them to reach more potential visitors, and actual visitors can spread the word about them through social media, allowing them to do even better.
