duplicate content is all about getting the content from other site and implementing same content for your website will lead to get indexed as spammy so avoid duplicate content.

What you mean when you say truth? Duplicate content is duplicate. Its copied from some other source and used.

There is no duplicate content penalty. Google major search engine function is to offer a customer the best possible results for a search, based upon the search term keywords that the customer has used in the Google search box.

Though there is no direct penalty of duplicate contents, but Google may rank according to which page it believes is original and authoritative. Your customers might have a problem understanding your website’s content if most of its pages are very similar to other sites.

The truth is that the only major concern with duplicate content is how it affects rankings.

There are two types of duplicate content:

    1) Duplicate content within your own website where you have too much of the same content on more than one page of your website. If you have too many pages on your website like this, your entire website can be demoted in the search results by Google Panda. Google demotes your website in this case because it thinks your website is low quality. In Google’s eyes, a website should have mostly unique content on it. So if you have too many pages that are too similar, like 50% of your pages for instance, then they will likely (but not always) demote your entire website. Your site is seen as being a low value, low quality website in Google’s eyes.

    2) Duplicate content on multiple domains where you have more than one website online with the same page content on it. There are many cases where multiple websites will have nearly identical content on them. For instance, some websites syndicate articles that have already been published elsewhere online. You can end up having anywhere from 2-1,000 websites with that very same article on it. When Google sees this happen, it chooses a small number of those pages to return in its search results while demoting all of the rest. So, only a few of those pages will rank well while the rest of those pages won’t rank at all for that exact keyword.

In general, having too much duplicate content on your own website, whether it is content from within your own website or republished content from other websites is a bad idea. Small amounts of it are okay. Too much of it can really hurt you.

    1) So how do ecommerce sites get around this problem where many of their products are almost identical, and the only identifiable change is just one word in the title?

Content is the king of seo ranking factors. Duplicate content is punishable by penguin. . . unique content is only the best... recently online programmers copying websites content .

for example this webpage is original content but automatically spammers spamming and ensure in their web blog http://antiagingspirit.com/3634/health-tips-for-healthy-skin/ . but google automatically identify and punish the duplicate website.

Yes, duplicate content are much more found nowadays mostly in News / E magazine site and others. The news is just copied from each other. I think people use the duplicate content to target traffic. But It can be stopped. Like in photos/videos, the trademark must be kept. So, that If your original contents gets duplicated, you still have the copyrights laws.

Many of them don't get away with it. Their sites get demoted in the search results and they complain about it. There were many good sites that got demoted from the Google Panda update. That is why the update caused such a big stir.

Some of the sites that did get demoted were able to correct their problem by adding enough unique content to their pages or otherwise restructuring their website.

Are you category duplicate content as off page SEO? Just a correction, it is part of on page SEO problem.

Google panda, is targeting on site with lot of thin content instead of duplicate content.

    Example of thin content:

Notice number 3 on that list - scraped content

Scraped content = duplicate content = content copied from another site

Even if it is slightly modified it can still be considered duplicate content.

    Google's definition of scraping - http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2721312

So just to be clear Google Panda does target duplicate content in addition to other forms of low quality content.

Generally duplicate content will not cause a site penalty by search engine. If a website is relied on duplicate content to get achieve good ranking, once the algorithm discard the duplicate content, it will result the site back to origin level.

The similar concept is apply to Google penguin, when a site depend on spam link to get rank, once algorithm filter not trusted link, it will cause a site back to actual ranking. That also explain negative SEO will not hurt a website.

If you have similar content on your website pages or you have copied the content from somewhere, then the Search Engines will penalize your website due to the same content.

Always avoid duplicate content that you have taken from other websites.

I had a client who I was doing SEO work for and I was struggling to get his keywords ranked in the Top 30. After researching his products, I found that he had just copy and pasted all the product content from the supplier website. As soon as I removed this and wrote unique content, he was in the top 10/top 5 for his keywords.

Two variables are required in order for content to qualify as negative use of "duplicate content". The first is that it has to be a word for word copy of the original content. The second variable is that negative use of "duplicate content" will not contain a LINK to the original content or article. This is known as "content scraping" in which the original content is copied verbatim without linking to the original

Beth has put it correctly....there is a lot of content syndication that is taking which means that content is appearing in two separate places....(for example Scoop It) but sites are not going to get penalised if they show a link to the original content...

Use of duplicate content is a black hat seo technique. Its good to use white hat seo techniques. If we use black hat seo techniques then we will never get good results. Search Engine gives most importance to quality content. Duplicate content is all about getting the content from other sites and implementing same content for our website.
