It's hard to say, since there are situatons in which neither one will help. If your website ranks for a phrase no one searches, it's not going to help. In the sane way, if you get a lot of traffic, but very little conversions, that doesn't help either. If had to choose, I would say Google rank for a phrase that converts well is better than just getting high traffic. On the other hand, if you use other methods, and get traffic that converts well, do you need Google rank? Well, yes, if you get ranked for phrases that also convert well.

According to me if you want to get benefits from your website like generate to ROI for your business then you should have higher traffic for your site. In another case if your website keyword are well in SERP then automatic you get higher traffic.

The two are related. Traffic is directly proportional to your ranking.

When you are ranking high on Google, there should be a corresponding increase in traffic.

The answer is case to case basis. There is no concrete answer on that one. See there are lots of websites that's ranking in the first page of Google yet they don't receive traffic. On the other hand, there are websites that receive a good number of traffic even if they don't have a good ranking.

There are lots of factors that affect the traffic and ranking of a website. Some may answer you ranking and some are traffic. That means there is no exact answer. All you have to do is know it yourself through case studies and observations.

    Well Said joeroxx.

What really matters according to me is: What Brings you business, Leads, Money, Conversations.

That's it. Keep it simple and balance, just don't try to get high traffic with no conversation and good rankings with no Search Volume.
