I am using Google Adwords tool for keyword analysis and to find new keywords for my website. When I am searching for new keyword ideas it is showing the average monthly searches and competition for the keywords. But I don't know the how Google Adwords determines the competition for the keywords. What does "keywords competition" mean in Google Adwords? How it is determined?

Competition involves websites/profiles which have been targeting or having presence on the SERPs for our searched phrase on the SERPs and tool. We have to choose low competitive keywords as it has more chances to get rank faster.

Actually, it has more to do with the keywords themselves, rather than the number of web pages ranking for them. Keywords are designated as "high, "medium". or "low". The "high" competition keywords get more search traffic, so more companies want their web pages to rank for them. In some cases, a single keyword, such as "shoes", may not be specific enough to the search, but might still be "high" competition. Even a specific keyword like "mens athletic shoes" could be a "high" competition keyword, because it is very specific, and will get a lot of searches. A "medium" keyword gets a lot of traffic, and is a bit more specific than single word, but still general enough so it has less companies wanting to rank for it. For example "best athletic shoes", or "casual athletic shoes". A "medium" competition keyword can change to a "high" competition keyword just by adding a few words to make it more specific. For example, by adding "for men" to the keyword "best athletic shoes", you now have a "high" competition keyword. "Low" competition keywords, however, are usually low for a reason - no one searches them. So, going after a "low" competition keyword may not be the best idea. if you want the best results.

I am not sure if someone pointed it out or not, but there is one very important thing people often don't know about Google adwords keyword tool.

The competition shown in Keyword tool is only the PPC competition, not organic competition. Therefore, it means that the number of sites competing to get high position in "Paid Search Engine Result" not overall SERP - Remember those 3 paid snippets on top and some on the right side? Basically, higher competition means higher bids. Adword owners place higher bids to get higher position in Paid Search Engine Result. High competition for a keywords means more people/adword-owners placing higher bids to achieve top position in paid results.

If you are using Google Adword Keyword Planner to research keyword for organic purpose, then keyword competition might not be that useful for you. However, you can still guess the competition by searching the exact "keyword" in quotations on Google and see how many websites are ranking on that keyword. Usually, long-tail keywords also have low competition since such keywords are mostly related to a specific niche which narrow downs the competition.

Generally it means how many websites are targeting the same keywords. If so many people are targeting the same keyword then it will difficult to get rank on it while on a low competition keyword you can rank easily.

Well, according to me, the keywords competition is nothing but a way where you can check, in particular keyword, how much traffic you are getting from the visitors as well as how many websites are continually focusing on particular that keywords. It is easily optimized with the help of Google Adwords. If you are thinking that you can get a better result after targeting a highly competitive keyword, then you are completely wrong, because there is huge traffic, so it is advisable that you should target on a low competition keyword.

Keyword competition is the clear cut metrics that shows how many companies are targeting the keywords for the SEO purpose. Its very hard to target the keyword and get the website ranked if the competition is high. Where as medium and low competitive keywords are quite easy to get ranked.

High adwords competition is a lose indication that more aggressive seo ranking efforts are being made by competing sites as well. It's the number of Advertisers bidding on a keyword. It is NOT the number of websites competing for a keyword. A higher competition in the google keywords tool is a good thing.

The keyword competition is probably a more direct indicator of words that marketers have found to convert well to sales.
