I am wanting to start up a local business working with older people in a retirement city... a friend of mine does gutters and makes excellent money and is always busy.

I was wondering if I can get your ideas on what kind of business would be good to start for older people in the villages in fl? Its the largest retirement community in the country.

I was thinking about mobile dog grooming. Custom homemade candles. Or just mowing lawns. I would like to get my girlfriend involved so idk if mowing lawns would be her thing...

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Soflo
Before you decide what they want and what they are willing to pay for, I would suggest you do a bit of market research first. How about if you come up with a set of questions to determine their needs and get their ideas of what they want, dream about or struggle with? What frustrates them? Get eyeball to eyeball with them by asking their opinion. To my experience older people have a lot more patience and would probably be more open to your questions and willing to take time to answer you, than other communities would. If you show them that you are genuinely interested in providing a service or a product to them that will really be of benefit to them, you will later be able to go and sell to those you interviewed. So gather their contact information and make it worth their while for giving you the information that you needed. Any small freebie that conyeys a thank-you for participating will do! Hope that helps.

    Hello soflo,

What both Fergal and Changed Creation said is correct. First, providing us with a little more information about your skills and experience would be helpful. Also, doing alot of research is key to help decide what business will be right for seniors down there.

It's true that the elderly population, worldwide, is the most untapped market out there so if you decide to get into that market, wish you all the best. I do have 1 idea that may be worth exploring but again, you need to do research.

Something like mobile transportation. Like a car service. I figure that seniors, well many of them, no longer drive when they reach a certain age. Could be because of medical reasons or by choice. And I don;t know about you, but I feel totally independent when I'm driving. If that were taken away from me, it would deliver a blow. I'm assuming some seniors may feel the same way. So maybe a car service may work. Check with FLA regulations though on what you would actually need for that ... just something to pick them up, drop them off, etc.

Just throwing that out there. Not even sure if that's possible but just do thorough research on whatever you choose to do.

With seniors, I think anything that helps them overcome problems with aging and keeping them independent would be valuable. Cost will be an issue as well, since many seniors are on fixed incomes. I though know your area, though, so can't tell if the seniors there are affluent or not.

As the other posters on this thread mention, you need to do research. Also, put yourself in the shoes of your potential customer. Think like they do. That will give you ideas.

I would think handy services, lawn care and mobility would be valuable services to offer.

    Hi soflo...
I felt nice to know about that you are working with and for the elder community...Its a most beautiful experience I should say..What I feel in this matter is that as you are working with the old people, they have a lot of experience , the learnings of their life. Try to gather that from them, try to know what they love to do,what they like, in what side their experience exists...What are their skills and interests...For eg : Old ladies can do the woven work, male members love to read newspapers and writing work, they give a good advice well, they can become advisors, if they have done share trading ever, they can give their experience to you, an experience works a lot in every part of life...

Well.....there are lots of businesses you can start from home. Now the thing is what are your skills and what are you capable of doing. Know your skills before you start something. If you want, you can create your own product. Before you start, research the market, learn from other's experiences and then examine what unique talents and skill that you have that can provide value to others and use that to create a product that find a solution to problems related to senior/older people.
