3owl.com and a few other web hosting companies offer unlimited bandwidth and diskspace for a low amount of only $1 per month. I think this is quite pathetic, since hardly any of their customers uses more than only 10GB bandwidth per month. Is the "unlimited" amount really necessary?

No, it's not necessary but it obviously attracts customers or the hosting companies would not continue to offer it. Small users who will never exceed even the minimal limits that hosting companies used to set still may worry about going over the limit and incurring charges for using extra bandwidth.

    It's called "peace of mind."

They knows that their general customers doesn't use more that 1Gb or at most 10Gb so they offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth because users will feel there is no limitation for just small price of 1$ and will join it.Who would join limited service leaving unlimited?
