Yes you have to change all the url of your website from non www to www or you will use the Canonical tag in you website. Otherwise Google will consider your website as duplicate.

Yes, going with www version of website is highly recommended from SEO point of view. Apply cannonicallization to any non www version URL to www. Doing so the the chances of duplicacy gets balanced and apparently the performance in the search engines also gets better.

your last point was wrong.Google does not consider the website as duplicate if that site not having canonical tag.But adding Canonicalization tag to the website is the best practices in ON Page factors.Because search engine will give the more credits to the website which was having canonicalization tag or htaccess. But some of the website having good ranking even does not having canonical tag. That kind of website might be having good branding.

    Submit a change of address

On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want to move from.
Click the gear icon; then click Change of Address.
Follow the instructions in the Change of site address tool.
Monitor your traffic as indicated in Move a site with URL changes.

If you have done non www to www. Now get all your links by using screaming frog spider and get all urls. And check whether still pointing to non www version from your internal pages. If so then find that page edit the internal links properly.

Also don't forgot to use the rel=canonical tag on home page, after you done the redirect.

Everything is ok, then submit the site into webmaster and check the crawl errors if any.

Once you've set your preferred domain, you may want to use a 301 redirect to redirect traffic from your non-preferred domain. If you have done with 301 redirection then no need to do any thing. Just promote your site and generate lead, do enjoy and live happy.
But after specified preferred domain on webmaster; if you have not been done yet with 301 redirection then I recommend that you use a server-side 301 redirect. This is the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to the correct page. The 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location.
