I learned by example. I started by taking apart a contact form and worked from there. If I needed help I would google something.
It's not the easiest, but it worked a lot better for me then reading a book.
This site was very helpful in learning PHP: http://www.tizag.com/phpT/

I don't recommend w3schools AT ALL. A lot of it's information is out dates.
Here are a few of the best resources:
    1. http://php.net/manual - The official PHP manual
    2. http://thenewboston.com - Great video tutorials(free)
    3. http://phpacademy.org - Great video tutorials(free)
    4. http://lynda.com - Great video tutorials(paid)
I myseld learned thanks to thenewboston and phpacademy. I use the PHP manual as a function reference.

The w3schools link given by Fergal is the best I found when I first tried learning it. Start with just a simple code like "echo hello world" its usually the first, the very basic and then block of codes. It doesn't make sense if you start with the complicated ones. Lynda.com offers php video tutorial too if you don't like reading.

I personally think that learning w3schools is the best way for people to learm any type of coding. I dont know why but I seem that its easy to learn and you are able to learn a lot from using their site.

I've use tons of tutorials like the following:
    w3schools
    tizag.com
    Lynda.com

I've search for more website similar to http://www.codecademy.com/ which is a really great online tutorial for coding and I found http://www.programr.com/PHP - I haven't tried it yet.

You should have done a google search and find that w3schools.com tops the list. I in fact have learned HTML,CSS,Javascript,PHP from w3schools. Although the javascript tutorial is not that nice there but all the other topics are given in great details there with many detailed examples.

If you did a google search -"learn PHP", then you would have come to the right location. W3Schools is the best for learning HTML,CSS,Javascript,XML,ASP,PHP and SQL. Except Javascript Tutorial, anyone interested to learn web development can learn web design and coding from w3schools. In fact I have learnt PHP and SQL from w3schools starting from novice.

Read some tutorials, you can follow W3 School. Experiment by trying to modify the code. Try and built your own php applications and the mistakes you make can be learning from using tutorials or forums like this. I have found forums like businessadvice one of the best places to learn.

ai.paoleen was right to ask for suggestions here. Personally I prefer to get feedback and suggestions from community members, rather than just using whatever is at the top of Google. It's good to talk and you can learn a lot from the feedback and experiences of others.

From my point of view for a better understanding of PHP you need to join a professional institute or professional tutor.

It is not easy, but it worked much better for me after reading the book.

Personally I learnt better from written tutorials than from video tutorials. One site that I liked was Tizag given by patrick.s but W3schools is not too bad as well which is given by Fergal.
