Is telemarketing dead or does this just make people mad?

I don't think it's dead. However companies have to be much more cautious now in their approach than they were in the past. Since the advent of the National Do Not Call Registry in the US for example, they risk being in hot water with the FTC if they violate it.

Telemarketing isn't a job that should be handed to just anyone. That's where several companies make their mistake, by making it an entry level position. You need enough customer service experience in handling calls and customers to be able to do so without a script or you shouldn't be doing the job imho. There's a fine line between doing it right and being overly pushy. Customers hate discovering the person's using a script and it's rarely hard to spot, give the stilted tone of most of them.

jimmyb45 telemarketing is still a huge part of business and many companies are successfully using telemarketing to service their existing customers and to gain new customers. Are you planning on using telemarketing for your own business? Or perhaps you are considering starting a telemarketing business?

Telemarketing is still alive and well, many businesses still have their telemarketers as earlier mentioned used to existing clients and gaining news ones. It is quite a tough job specially on cold-calling but is very useful in most business sectors.

    Changes in Marketing

I know the post is a little stale but I want to weigh in. There are different categories of telemarketing. Residential cold calling with an actual sale being made on the call is dead. Unless you are calling from a nationally branded company or from a company which offers a service and is local to the area you are calling, forget it. The days of calling all over the country to sell a widget is over. Direct response marketing which generates a warm lead, whether its an inbound call or an online form filled out prompting a call, etc will always work. Business to Business telemarketing has slowed down also but niche products will still make their way to the decision maker and of course as with residential marketing, if you are a local company, it makes it a lot easier.

The FTC has made it much harder in the last few years and local state laws are also changing quite a bit. Make sure you do your homework before launching a cold campaign. Make sure you have all the paperwork in place BEFORE you start.

Welcome to Business Advice Forum Greg and thanks for the insight. Do you work in the telemarketing industry yourself? I worked with Sitel, both in the UK and in Ireland, for a few years myself.
