Once you know what your website will be about, research as many websites as you can looking for design techniques you like and also points you don't like.

Simplicity is the key to design your logo in professional way. It all depends about your decisions and instructions when you are going to design a logo for your company as it defines your company and the logo defines you. A professional logo designer knows very well the importance of keeping your logo as simple as possible.

Graphics used for website design must be optimized to the internet. Unoptimized graphics will lead to delay in loading web pages and this can be disgusting to visitors on the site most of whom will not even be patient enough to wait for the pages to open before they take their exit. It is vital that the graphics optimized to the internet so that the web pages can open fast enough.

First go for the needs and demand of the product for which you are going to make site. Make your site simple and attractive for user to visit and provide more information as much as you can. There are many free templates available you can also go for them as there are many designs in them.

    Hi,

1 Include a Tagline which should be the most obvious element on a web page.
2 Implement 27 characters wide Site Search and place it on top of your website.
    3 Don’t Use Extensive Graphics
4 Don’t Break the Workflow, Allow every action to be canceled if necessary.
5 Create Easily Scannable Web Pages, place the most important information on top of your web page.
6 Don’t Design Misleading UI Controls that looks like a button, but is not.
7 Give Meaningful Feedback don’t forget that feedback works both ways.
    8 Do Not Overuse Javascript
9 Avoid CAPTCHAs, use more usable methods instead.

    Hope it will help.

HI.. I think some important part of website design are -
    1. Select and stick to a colour scheme
    2. Use templates.
    3. Provide an easy to use navigation system.
    4. Don’t go overboard on special effects
    5. Backgrounds
    6. External Links
    7. Site Map & Search Feature
    8. Content is King

If you want to design a professional looking website, the top most things to stay away from should includes:

    1. Flash intros, revolving globes, bevelled line separators, animated mail boxes
    2. Loads of pop up or pop under boxes
    3. Autoplay music. Allow your customer to play music only if they choose.
    4. Hit counters of the free variety, which say “you are 27th visitor”
    5. Date and time stamps, unless your website is updated daily or weekly
    6. Busy backgrounds.

go easy on the images, and stay away from flash. avoid css3 if you can - it has some amazing features, but some aren't cross browser - so do your due diligence

jquery sliders are really good. if you want to go far with a website, try to focus on the layout that's easy on the user experience.

The software life cycle is : Analysis Design Prototype Coding Testing Implementation Support

Importantly the first three stages are significantly cheaper to do than later stages.

At the analysis stage you should be ambitious and look to future requirements.

Once you know in detail what the User wants you can do a paper Design (and/or use UML diagrams, database schemas).

Using a photocopier, scissors and paper paste you can create a Storyboard which give the User a good idea about the projected outcome.

If the design is good the software will (nearly) write itself.

Thank you for your interest. I've written this page which I use to guide non technical managers through the process of designing and building software and outlining what to expect. Some of it might be of use to you in your project - (sorry forum wont allow me to link yet) - itformdeveloper.co.uk/gold.php
