If you can share your example work here it would be more good.

You may create your profile with freelance jobs providing portals, potential small businesses would contact you to hire your services. If you satisfied them, they may contact you again for their future projects. Take the first step from here, rest the opportunities are endless.

Or you can join competitions to test your own ability. Such as 99designs.com

You can also join forums and promote your services there, i believe there will be at least one or two business for you.

Basically there are 2 major ways for you to get customer.

    1. You go find customer. Such as door to door sales, cold calling.....more on direct sales strategic. More on number game, approach 100 customer and conversion of 10 customer.
    2. Let customer find you. Participate competition, setup a website to improve design portfolio and branding. High closing rate, but need time to build up.

If you are seeking out small businesses, you probably need to do that on a local level. As band indicated, it requires that you contact the customer. It could be the methods he mentioned (door to door sales, cold calling) or it could be less personal (direct mail, radio advertising, etc...). It is important for most businesses to do but it is either time-consuming (you can only make so many cold calls) or expensive to do in large numbers or over a large geographic area in the case of direct mail or other forms of advertising.

If you want the small businesses to seek you out, then your approach should be both to be visible in places that small businesses look. Small business forums are one place, particularly forums for a particular type of small business (rather than webmasters). For example, if you have done work for a couple of jewelry stores, participate in a jewelry store forum.

You can try and start with Fiverr. Offer your services.

Look through websites and see which ones have crappy logos and designs. That should give you a good headstart in looking for customers.

Actually, BAF has a place where you can sell/offer your services and where you might also find a good list of clients that you can prospect about.

    Here it is: http://www.businessadviceforum.com/forumdisplay.php/46-Member-Ads-amp-Marketplace
