    I've been considering starting a personal blog recently. The main topics I would discuss would include;

    • Managing forums
    • Webmaster topics
    • Business
    • Personal success

    Other minor topics would include;

    • Business news
    • Irish news and current affairs
    • Running
    • Perhaps movie and book reviews

My main concern is that blogs on such a broad range of topics are often not very popular or successful - niche / specialised blogs tend to do much better. However, I'm not sure that I would be sufficiently dedicated to any one of those topics to post regularly on it alone.

So what do you think, should I start a personal blog? Any suggestions or ideas would be welcomed.

I believe starting a blog is a good idea. I would suggest you to start blog on the topics you are interested and as your members growing. The topics will also change become interesting.

I wish you best of luck with your idea..

Starting a blog is great for business or personal use - however I would recommend focusing the blog around a niche or small set of topics. Its hard to build a regular following if you blog about too many topics.

However if you are blogging just for fun, and not worried about building a following, then go ahead and do it - no reason why you can't.

I believe it would work out successfully, so long as there is a reason for people to read. I think once a month, you could release some sort of eBook to go with your blog (which then could be monetized) and I reckon if you can get your blog out there in the webmaster/business community, it would definitely do well.

I think you should do it and write about whatever you like, Fergal. Do it for the fun and not the following though. You'll get much more enjoyment out of it and if you keep that in mind, it will stay a personal blog as intended. :)

Thanks everyone for the feedback and suggestions, a lot to consider there. I'll think about it over the coming weeks. My main concern is that I would not have the time or interest to write very often, on the other hand maybe I'd love it once I got started.

The very first thing that you need to consider is if you have time to create and maintain such a blog, even though you already have BAF and FP.
And I agree with Kay, do it for fun and enjoy on it. Create a one with a topic you like and not those trending/high paying topics that you don't have interest on.

If you have some free time on your hand, go for it.

Thanks Dan, I do agree with Kay's great comment regarding only writing on topics I enjoy. I wouldn't do it any other way.

I would definitely encourage you to start your own personal blog. There are a variety of different reasons.

    1. Business is becoming more and more online these days and your blog can act as a more sophisticated business card, drawing people to you and seeing what you are about.

    2. In business, everyone should have their own personal brand. Just as I have my own brand "Jahan Choudhry" and seek to give a certain image, I believe that a blog helps to create the brand, image of you that you wish to give others.

Now, this could even just be a plain, down-to-earth, approachable person. This is still a type of image and thus brand.

    3. When you share your knowledge and expertise with others, you are contributing and making a difference, a positive difference. I was at a seminar today and they were mentioning the phrase "be the difference that you would like to see".

Most of us know, that when you do something good, the law of attraction/karma insures it comes back to you manyfold.

    4. It is a great way of meeting new people and can be quite satisfying, you may find yourself starting a few blogs with "One of my readers recently emailed me about...., so I'm going to share a bit more information about this...".

    5. You can alternate and have variety in the blog, it doesn't always have to be serious and very "businessy" and it can be fun or light-hearted too.

    6. Worst case scenario is you start a blog (for free) and you stop after a while for whatever reason. You lose nothing and the blog is still up there, and it does no damage to your image.

So go for it! (to everyone)

Thanks for the encouragement and support Jahan, you make great points and I'll see if I can schedule some time to start blogging over the coming months. Thanks again.

I will encourage you to do it. You can add it to the Forum. For example www.blog.baf.com

Starting a blog is always a good idea. You can categorize all your different topics. But you have to make sure you update each of them frequently, this will keep your blog alive.

Thanks Azertyle, I may add a blog to the forum at some time in the future, however that would not really be a personal blog. If I do start a personal blog it will probably be on a different domain.

Thanks Andym, that really is the challenge, updating it frequently over the long term. I will almost certainly start a blog, once I'm confident that I can achieve this.

Fergal, it's only up to you to decide :) If you don't feel like writing but would do it only because forum members advise you so, it won't last long.

From my experience, once you loose the interest in the topic, it's very hard to keep blogging. And vice versa, if the subject keeps you motivated, you can go on forever.

My best advice is just to listen to yourself carefully and try to see if you'll be interested in those topics in 6 months/a year/3 years... you get the idea.

I've been enjoying your community for over a year now and I would gladly subscribe to your blog should you have one on business topics.

Thanks for the advice Ruben, it's similar to what Darren Rowse advises in his ProBlogger book and I will think about it seriously. I'm happy to hear that you have enjoyed our forum for so long and am delighted that you've started posting.

    Hi,

I'm new to the forum, so i found this thread interesting so ... i will try to add my advice.

I like discover personnal blogs who talks about business or others subjects because it's all differents ways, differents points of view on a single subject.
Even the subject have been discuss thousand times on several blogs, each other have his own style, own sight, etc ...

If you want to ... don't hesitate to do. There's no bad side to do it :)

By the way rubs, nice website in sign :)

Thanks VVhite_Angel, I'm still thinking about it. I've quite a lot on for the next couple of months so will probably not start during that time.

Do it when you feel right. Make sure you do it as something comfortable and enjoyable.

If it is like a chore or pressure then now is not the time.

A blog can be your own cyber-canvas where you share some personal opinions of your own when/if you wish to.

The key ingredient to a successful blog is enjoyment!

Yeah indeed you must, because I think, starting and managing a blog can bring your business up in less time as compared to other tools, but the thing that matters is the management of target audience according to your product. It may need change of strategies from time to time to keep your product updated.
