Er, what I can see is that most people set their goals, but how many of you
actually share your goals with people around you?

Some people said that this is a great way to inspire yourself as once you've made the
public commitment, you've got no way out but to achieve your goals.

While some people said that this is not a good way as you'll feel down when people
laugh at you and your goals.

I'm curious to know what is your opinion about this...

Hi Shawn, welcome to the Business Advice Forum.

That's a very interesting question... I think that is exactly what the "Your Goals" forum is all about. It's not just about having a goal but sharing it with the rest of the members in this forum so we'll be more focused on achieving them.

As to sharing these goals verbally, I also share my goals to others but only to my hubby and to close friends and relatives. I think that it's okay to share my goals because sharing in itself is already the important first step to realizing these dreams.

    Hello Nazreen, that's very true.
Sharing our goal is the first step to realizing it.
And I'm going to open a thread for my goals as well, :D

Good question Shawn. I agree with Nazreen that sharing your goals can be very useful. It can inspire you to work harder towards achieving them.

When you share your goals, you will often be surprised at the things the people you share your goals with, can do to help you achieve those goals. They will often have useful tips and access to resources that you never knew they had.

Unfortunately some people may laugh at you, but you can turn this round and use it to motivate you.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
However, what if I met with someone who will laugh at my goals?

Just like if I tell my friend that I'm going to be a millionaire, they will
think that it is just not possible and they might laugh at me
if I fail to achieve this goal.

This is probably due to the difference in mindset and thinking.
Won't this makes me down? :)

Shawn if people laugh at your goals do you think you might be able to use that as a motivational tool? Tell yourself that you have something to prove to yourself and to the people who laughed at you and use this as a motivation to work harder towards achieving your goal.

You could also set smaller goals and share them publicly. For example rather than telling people that you are going to be a millionaire, you could tell them that you will make x amount of dollars this month or this year. Then when you achieve that goal set a bigger one. People won't laugh as your goals get bigger, because they will know that you have achieved your previous goals.

Please do keep us updated with how you are progressing with this.

Good luck with it Shawn! I think sharing helps motivate you as has been said but so does holding some of it back. What Fergal suggests is wise - go for smaller ones but keep the big one in your heart. As for the ones who laugh, forget them. Those that dare to be different are the ones that win out in the end. :)

I know what to do from now on.
Dare to be different and keep going on until I achieve what I really
want in my life. Thanks again. :)

Wow! That's some really good advice Fergal. Thanks.

For myself, I always tell myself that I shouldn't try to please everyone. If I do, it would only get me down hearing all those negative remarks. For me, it's better to please only those people that are important to me.

This is certainly a positive way of looking at it. As for me I occasionally share my goals with friends and family. I've also experienced being laughed at by my friends when I fail to achieve my goals but what I realized now is that I've achieved most of my goals that I shared to them and as I matured, my goals became more achievable.
I totally agree with Fergal about setting smaller goals. I set a lot of small goals as a means to eventually achieve my bigger goals.

Wow, so this has proved that sharing goals with others did really help
in making our goals come true.

So I guess the first step after we've set our goals, is to share with
    others about our goals.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences. :D
