Can you please recommend any blogs, books or other resources that provide helpful information on SEO for online forums?

    Thanks!

Hi Fergal, found my way in, can't see an introductions thread, so will just dive right in, using vB will give you no end of SEO help, to start with you need a url rewrite mod to get rid of the auto PHP written ones, like this one is businessadviceforum.com/showthread.php?t=9127 when it should read businessadviceforum.com/business-advice-business-questions-online-business-forums/online-marketing-advertising-seo/seo-for-forums

Without getting all technical, you should be able to work out the maths, how ever many pages are on the forum can be turned into multiple keywords.

    This should get you started

Hi KipFXDesign, thanks for joining and for posting on Business Advice Forum. We will have search engine friendly URL's when we eventually upgrade to vBulletin 4 - hopefully that will help.

You can find our introductions forum here.

    Thanks again!

You do not need to wait for vB4 buddy, you can use VBSEO on V3 I think! Either way there are mods for it.

Thanks KipFXDesign, are you aware of any mods that can do this, besides VB SEO?

Thanks for that KipFXDesign, I'll give that serious consideration. Anything that helps our SEO would be great.

I don't mean to come across as a disagreeing chap, but the main changes from vB3 to vB4 is the SEO tweaks, because they do need SEO, with so many forums out there, I know, I run one, you need to be the top ranking one, and proper promotion will only get you so far (but still important).

If I am telling a friend in a bar on a Friday night about Business Advice Forums being a great place, by the time he gets to signing up, he will probably type Business Forum into Google, and that will determine which one he joins first.

And that is down to SEO.

I hope so, we rank pretty well for that search term. We also rank highly for "business advice", "online business forum" and "business questions".

I'm not sure about books or other resources but I STRONGLY recommend VB SEO rather than trying to make Vbull do everything you want it to piece by piece.

I use it on my affiliate forum and have super high rankings and get lots of search traffic.

Thanks Flora, I'm familiar with SEO Book and they do provide some great tools and resources.

Thanks CatalystMarketing, we will be upgrading to VB4 at some time in the future. Do you think that VB SEO still has advantages when used with VB4?

To be honest Fergal, I'm not sure. I have had my head DEEP in the sand when it comes to VB4 and won't even let myself read about it. My theme is all custom and it was a bear to get it to match my site and blog, so I really don't want to upgrade so I just am ignoring it for now.

So I don't know that much about the new features and how well they help with SEO.

    Sorry couldn't be more help!

I can relate to that :) It doesn't help that the early versions of VB4 contained lots of bugs and were released before they were tested enough to be installed on public forums.

There are many plug-ins for each forum script so you do NOT need any SEO skills and you can make your site search engine friendly.

Are there any ones in particular that you would recommend SomeBoy?
