SEO is an organic process used to promote our website in search engine to beat the competitors who are engaged in online marketing and SEM is considered as an act of marketing a website by improving the ranks in the SERP, purchasing paid listing or any other search engine associated activities.

Actually, PPC is only one form of Search Engine Marketing, as is Search Engine Optimization. James Colin has provided a more accurate, simple definition.

In other words, probably in layman's term,

SEM is the general branch of all digital and search marketing and the like. SEO and PPC are two different practice under SEM.

Uthra! I contradict with you. In SEM, you may require not more than one person to do the job while in SEO you require people. If the site is too big, like 8000 pages, you need to have paid tools for completing your project. And with these daily upcoming new algorithms, I suppose, we should remove the "free" tag from SEO. Yes, we can talk about the degree of expense. what say?

Although his definition is not accurate, I believe what uthra is referring to is that with PPC, you need to pay the SE's, where with SEO you do not. Like uthra, you neglected to consider that SEO is actually a form of SEM. Depending on how complicated it is, either can require more than one person. You do make a valid point, however, when you say that "free" SEO is not really free. For some websites (although I think they can be substantially less than 8000 pages) a webmaster can use the paid version of marketing tools, and others may wish to hire an outside firm to perform SEO tasks for them. In either case, although there is no charge by the SEs, the tools or the SEO firm do have to be paid for, so, in that sense, "free" SEO is not really free.

No confusion SEO is used to optimize the search engine to increase the traffic to your website through On-page and Off-page optimization. Whereas SEM is used only to advertise your website in the internet through various techniques the only purpose of SEM is increasing the traffic through marketing in the internet.

SEO aims to provide better organic search results and SEM uses the search engines to advertise your website or business to Internet customers and send a more targeted traffic to your Web site.
