Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. When we refer to Meta tags we generally refer to two types, the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag. At one time Meta tags held tremendous value for website rankings, however they no longer carry the same importance due to it being abused. Although they are no longer as valuable, it is believed that certain Meta tags can still generate greater website visibility.

Meta tag works good previously to help search engine to get the keyword but it is no use at all since the search engine technology now is good enough to find the keyword themself

As of earlier this year, Google has indexed one trillion websites. In order to do that as quickly as possible, the bots and spiders need to be able to get in, index the site, go to the next one, index the site, go on to the next one, and so on. Anything that slows down that process will cause them to ignore that site.
Think of Google as a gigantic warehouse. Think about what would happen if someone pulled a truck up to the warehouse, and when the truck was opened, every box was blank except for a label that reads, "Box". How would the person unloading the truck know where each box needs to go? To use sigma's answer, yes, the person unloading the truck could open each box and search the contents to find out where it goes, but it would be more efficient if each box was clearly labelled. For Google, the Title Tag would be your "box" label, and your meta-description would be the "packing list". In the SERPs, your Title Tag would be the heading for your listing, and the meta-description would be the description of your page below the heading. If, by reading your listing in the SERP's, searchers find exactly what they are looking for, they are more likely to click on your listing.

    Re:

A meta tag is a line of HTML coding that contains metadata about a webpage. Meta tag information doesn't change how the page looks; it won’t be seen by the website viewer, unless they are viewing your source code. There are two common types of meta tags — meta description tags and meta keywords tags.

Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header of a web page. In terms of SEO, when people refer to Meta tags, they refer to Meta description tag and Meta keyword tag. Basically, Meta tags provide information about the content of the site.

Meta information is at rest a small issue when you desire to tell the search engine to identify about your content you must always give the search engines a clear sketch of what its needs to know about your page.

Depends a bit on the area that you're talking about. Keyword tags are pretty much ignored by many of the main search engines now (including Google). Title and description tags can be used to encourage search engine users to click on your entry - the title can also be used for a definite SEO boost.

The role of Meta Tag in SEO is very crucial... some points you must keep in mind while writing the meta tags are:

    1. The number of words - There is a word limit you have to maintain in your Meta Title and Meta Description.
    2. Proper and relevant keywords - The keywords that you use in your Meta Tags must also be used in the body of the page.
    3. Keyword Density - The keywords that you use in the Meta Tags must have a certain amount of density on the overall page.
    4. Unique Meta Tags - For every page you must have a different Meta Title & Description i.e don't repeat the same meta tags for other pages.
