I'm planning to convert most of my out bounding sidebar links to NoFollow and only put a minimum number of DoFollow links.
This is the prevent the passing of Page Rank juice. And it's one of the things that advertisers want. Some advertisers is looking for sites with less out bounding links.

Is that possible? Will it do something bad on my site? Will Google penalize it?

If you are talking about adding nofollow links, then Google (Matt Cutts) actually supports and promotes the usage of the nofollow tag. If they are dofollow, Google "may" (but never always) consider that as a way to increase PR for other sites, so that could harm your site in the end. Note how Wikipedia uses nofollow outbound links, and it isn't banned.

I have read somewhere that having nofollow links on one's homepage is bad.
    Is that true?

I don't see how it is bad. Nofollow just means you don't want Googlebot to crawl that link. Matt Cutts (Google Search Quality team member) makes a post about nofollow tags: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/quick-comment-on-nofollow/

He never mentions that it could be a bad thing. Also:

dotDavid has given you some great advice. Adding no-follow links should not harm your blog's search engine ranking in any way. Google would much prefer to see no-follow links on a site, than a site offering to sell text links, without the no-follow tag.

Thanks Dan, sorry that was a mistake, what I meant to say was "...than a site offering to sell text links, without the no-follow tag." I've edited my post to fix the error.

So far, I have included a nofollow tag on on of the link groups on my side bar.
What I have included is this: rel='noindex, nofollow'

Thanks for the help guys.
