    Problems with Keyword Cannibalization?
Many times by choice or accidentally we tend to target one specific keyword on two or a lot of pages on same web site. Such style of keyword targeting is named keyword cannibalization. This issue is a reason for having each terribly less no. keywords or a large no. of keywords that square measure to be targetted on an internet site. It may also be a reason for two or a lot of variations of a same keyword. And most of the days website house owners and SEOs square measure unaware of this issue or they're not abundant fazed concerning it.

    Problems it will cause:

    1. It forces search engines to settle on the most effective page among totally different pages that target same keyword/s. essentially pages of 1 single web site vie with each other for sure search terms.
    2. It divides the link juice returning from inward links into totally different pages of an internet site. take into account a couple of links returning to a precise page with AN anchor text which same anchor text is employed to link to different pages (which target an equivalent keyword) further. These links is pointed to 1 single page in ideal state of affairs. which would be a higher and arranged situation further.
    3. It creates problems with duplicate content. although webmasters and website house owners keep a check on duplicate content issue however owing to keyword canniblization repetitions happen within the content that within the finish isn't a decent sign.

To avoid this drawback, a radical classification of keywords has to be done and over that, a well organized website structure or internal linking structure is needed.

    I would like to comment....

Keyword cannibalization isn't an issue that's in the SEO forums much, nor is it something that many SEOs feature prominently in site reviews (at least, from my experience).
It typically starts when a website's information architecture calls for the targeting of a single term or phrase on multiple pages of the site. There's a number of rank-boosting features you lose out on when this happens:

    Internal Anchor Text
    External Links
    Content Quality
    Conversion Rate

So, instead of targeting the singular "snowboards" on every page, the pages must be focused on unique, valuable variations and all of them should be linked back to an original, canonical source for the singular term.

Apart from this, you need to focus on conversion rate. If one page is changing over better than the others, it is not good to have different, lower-converting versions focusing the same traffic. So you can use multiple delivery testing system.

It's not a problem at all. once you rank for same keyword for multiple pages then interlink those pages. Google will pick the best one and show case.

one more option try to redirect the page to some other page.HOpe it helps

If your pages are competing against each other for the same main keywords, try cannocial SEO strategy which is aimed at a page that owns a given keyword, sends clear signals to searchengines and human visitors, as to which page is the authority.

Keyword cannibalization appears when pages on your website fight for each other for certain keywords to gain rank in search engine. To solve this issue, you should first select the best page. Rest of pages can be redirected '301' to this page or use rel=canonical attribute for all duplicate or cannibalizing pages.

@daniel - Many thanks for sharing, I have heard about human & animal cannibalization, but keyword cannibalization, that's an entirely new term for me. It seems that siblings of same mother are competing with each other to rank higher.
