How do search engines feel about pop up windows on the landing page? I am considering putting one on my site front page for my newsletter optin.

Any experience or knowledge on this?

Personally I feel that, the pop up will block by browser. Pop up is require java script, search engine might not index it.

I wouldn't have a pop up to be honest, these frustrate users, just have a simple short form on every page and if the user wants to stay updated, they will fill it in.

I have a pop-up blocker on my computer, and almost always close the notification when I am told a pop-up was blocked, without looking at the pop-up. As both kpatelseo and DaveCain said, they are frustrating and humans do not like them. I personally find them annoying.

I think this could harm your search engine performance. Users generally don't like pop-ups, so it's likely that your bounce rates will increase. Google, in particular, will pick up on this and you may receive lower rankings as a result.

Why do you feel the need to add a pop up to your site Vfdehfv? It is possible to add a very effective newsletter sign up form without including an annoying pop up on your site. You can also increase sign ups by offering a free gift such as a free ebook or report to everyone who signs up.
