This is my first time to hire a web developer and I'd greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions you have on this job description, that would increase my chances of finding the right person.

    Thanks for reading!

Fergal, I'd take out the "not essential" parts of the first two sentences or you'll be deluged with everybody and their granny. It sounds like you're reinforcing that's not important which weakens the statement.

I'd rephrase that all to say

    # Any graphic or website design skills you have
    # What makes you the best person for this role.
    # Where I can see examples of your work online or your portfolio.

(The qualifications bit I'd say was already covered by the first part asking about their programming and development skills. )

I'd also add that references will be required that can be verified.

I know a programmer, would you like me to ask him to cast an eye over it?

Thanks for the replies. I've made some changes to the description.

Kay, I appreciate your point but I'm reluctant to remove the "not essential" because I don't want a good programmer to be put off applying just because they don't have graphic design skills or formal qualifications.

Please do, that would be very helpful.

I also think that when you hire a web developer he or she should have website design skills unless of course if you want him/her to develop web applications or software.

Most people who are hiring most often ask the prospects' asking price for his services. Maybe you can also add this in Fergal.

    Thanks Nazreen.

My plan is to advertise this position quite broadly, shortlist some of the applicants and then deal with money.

My main priority is that the developer can write and integrate the software. The mention of web design skills appears to be causing some confusion, so I've removed it.

I'm going to place the ad on BAF now, but I'm still open to suggestions to improve it.

Fair enough, it was merely a suggestion. :) Sorry I didn't get back to you on this yesterday, I've been in bed since just after I posted this with some bug which Mike picked up at work and passed on to me. It's just not been my month.

    I'll ask him, no problem.

Eek!! Fergal, I'm embarrassed to admit this went right out my mind, apologies. I asked him if he'd cast an eye over it too and he said he's no expert but would be happy to, and then I promptly forgot all about showing him it! I will, sorry. I'm still at sixes and sevens with all the storm stuff knocking me out of sync.
