I don't believe online affiliate programmes fool visitors. Most affiliate promotions look like any other ads and visitors to the website recognize them as ads. The website visitor may believe that the webmaster is being paid for the ad rather than getting a commission from any sales made. But I don't feel that, that really matters, as long as it is understood that the webmaster ins being paid to promote the product.

If a webmaster recommends a product without disclosing that they are being financially rewarded for promoting it, that could be considered fooling people. But this isn't limited to affiliate programmes or even the Internet. Any media publisher could do this with any form of advertising. In fact it reminds me of sport sponsorship, celebrity endorsement and product placement in movies, etc.

In what way could affiliate programmes be considered as fooling people?
