New businesses should focus on one thing? (Birthdayalarm.com)

    I've heard the age-old advice that when you are starting a small company, you need to take one thing and do it well, rather than be all things to all people. I think Al Ries' books say this.

    I've believed that advice for years but now after deactivating my birthdayalarm.com account I realized it's not that simple. Virtually no one uses Birthdayalarm.com. They use Facebook's birthday feature to find out who's birthday is today.

    Is this advice wrong? Or is there some other explanation? (e.g. they didn't consider the threat of substitutes)

    What exactly birthdayalarm.com do?

    You can set up email alerts for when a friend's birthday is upcoming.

    I personally don't think birthday plays an important role in making clients.The first thing according to me should be the service which you provide to your clients.

    But that's not the point of this thread. My question is - should a business really focus on doing one thing well or not?

    Yes I agree with you and in my point of view real focus of any business should be it's clients and their satisfaction.

    That's the primary thing i think which every new business should focus on.
