It can be good only if your website or blog is new and isn't listed in the search engines. Well settled blog should not be pinged and should be allowed to get crawled and indexed in a natural way.

It is essential in the sense that you need and want to be noticed by the search engines and other news aggregators.

So, if a "well settled" blog ping its links, will it put them into danger?

It is not harmful, just not necessary for the search engines.

This is from Wordpress.org: "WordPress automatically notifies popular Update Services that you've updated your blog by sending a XML-RPC ping each time you create or update a post." Since every Wordpress blog pings automatically, your pinging cannot possibly hurt you.

Pinging purpose is to inform search engine a site have new content release, it is up to search engine to take action.

    1. Is Google crawl a site according to ping services? Google may just take it as information, rather than instruction or action.
    2. Is keep Ping to Google will put a site into danger? Again, Google just take it as information. Else SERP can be easily manipulate by Ping services.

From experience of owning a forum and being able to see live info' of bots and crawlers, Tweeting or posting to Facebook tended to bring bots quicker than a ping.

Can PINGing many times within a certain period can lead your site being marked as SPAM?

I does use HTTrack to copies couple website, basically the software is copy pages according to site linking from 1 page to another page. Social media site have large audience, great content and high PR. Google is such a giant copy software; by follow those social media links, Google can easily discover most of the site.

The answer is no, because spammer may use such strategic to damage competitor site.
