No, link building is not dead. Building questionable links should be dead, as they do no good and may even harm your ranking in the search engines. Building natural links from good, relevant sites is still valuable.

Having links for related niche works best. Also, guest blogging is getting more attention.

I would not recommend pursuing only high PR backlinks because getting only high PR backlinks can look unnatural, which is a red flag for the search engines. It could therefore do more harm than good. Having said that, you should also, however, stay away from low-quality links like blog comments and forum signatures.

I don't think building link to your website is dead. I just suggest you need to build a link to the blog or site that related to your niche. So you will get interested visitors , not random visitors.

Although making your content unique is one aspect, there are others to consider as well. How informative is the article or blog post that you are writing? Does it sound natural when you read it? Where do you submit your article? Do you write for your own blog, or do you do primarily guest posting? Or, do you do a combination of both? Do you create all of your links yourself, or do you get links from other sources as well? All of this must be considered, in addition to making your content unique.
