If budget allow, Vbulletin is recommended. Beside that you can consider ip board.

For multiple forum comparison, you can refer to http://www.forum-software.org/.

Actually there are whole lot of them, VB is popular and little expensive. the right approach would be start with a low end product like SMF or some other, and if in an year you are able to achieve what you had envisaged, you can move or migrate to a bigger and better software..

vBulletin is a good forum software, but costly. phpBB is very popular Open-source software and has a large community supporting it, but in the past, has been buggy. I recommend looking into your options and search Google to see what's out there.

Go to Open Source CMS - Forum Apps to give a few a try.

If you need a guide, send me a PM.

    you have to use a
forum script, the most popular are phpBB ... then, after having your forum online
running 100%, relax and visit phpbb, vbulletin, etc websites

Vbulletin is better for customisation and phpbb is very amateurish IMO

Yes, I think phpbb is better for a forum just starting out. That way if the forum doesn't quite go how you want it, you haven't wasted your money because vBullitin is very expensive. Phpbb wants you to keep the phpbb link from the footer, then you may not get as much help in the phpbb support forums. The only downside I have noticed with phpbb is that they haven't been updating their software very often.
