Delete the following files and file types to clear A LOT of space. This is the first thing I do when I need more space on my computer.

    *.bak—Backup files.

    *.tmp—Temporary application files.

    *.~*—Temporary application files.

    ~*.*—Usually Microsoft work files.

    *.old—Needs no explanation.

    *.bkp—Backup files.

    *.$$$—Work files.

*.diz—Marketing files that come with shareware programs.

Readme.txt—Startup files that accompany most packages.

MSCreate.dir—Small control files Windows places into directories you create.

*.gid—Hidden index files created when you first access Windows 95 help files. These can really eat up space, as Figure B shows. If you haven't used the associated help file for a while, you can consider deleting the GID files. Windows will re-create them the next time you access the help file.

You can also do that by using the Disk Cleanup. You can access it by clicking the START button > All Programs > Accesories > System Tools and choose Disk Cleanup.

Yes I agree with you that most of the time computer speeds slow down because of viruses!! Insufficient Memory is also the reason but most of the time Virus is responsible for this.

I think the main difference between .bkp files and .bak files are the programs that made those files. Different programs have different outputs.

Viruses do not make themselves obvious. Their main purpose is to conceal themselves within your system so that you cannot find them. Even if you do find them they generally cannot just be deleted. It's not as simple as that.
