I am a director and 40% shareholder of a software business which has been trading for 2 years with last years trading at £280,000 sales with a £135,000 operating profit.

Unfortunately, I am no longer able to continue in the business due to personal financial issues. I need some advice on the best way to exit the business at the best value.

Welcome to our Business Forum mlawson. Those are good profits, well done on building the business up so successfully.

Would it be possible to sell your share of the business to the other shareholders? What legal structure does the business have - is it a partnership or a limited company?

Are there any agreements in place which include clauses detailing procedures for how a shareholder can exit the business? If there are you will need to go through them to determine if they would impact on the value you can get in any way.

It is always wise to have an EXIT point planned in your business. In this case, you should just go and sell your share.
