You can check them with Ahrefs or Screaming Frog SEO Spider. But both are paid.

you can see dead links in your webmasters tool- log in to Google webmaster tool and under diagnostics click on Crawl errors. Click on not found and you will see a list of all the links which are giving 404 error.

In google webmaster --> 404 errors.

These are dead pages, 404 error means page not working.

Since nobody has offered you a free way to do this I figured I'd chime in here...

If you're using Chrome go download the extension 'Check My Links'. Load whichever page you are concerned about and simply run the tool - voila!

You can use moz's open site explorer tool and linkdetective.com to classify your links and see which backlinks that you had are now dead.

    1. Run your site on moz.com's opensiteexplorer
    2. Export all your backlink data. Keep it the file in .csv format. Save it on your desktop
    3. Go to linkdetective.com [make sure you have an account]
    4. Create a new project.
    5. After creating a project, upload the .csv file of your backlinks from opensite explorer and run the report.
    6. After 5-10 mins [depends on the volume of backlinks that you have], it will show you the classification of your backlinks from forum posts, to article directories, blog comments, followed, nofollowed, and that includes dead links.
    7. You can download the file and just sort the dead links.

    Hope it helped.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Scrapebox helps as well. It's a one-time purchase for the product but you will use this for multiple areas in online marketing (not limited to SEO only). Get it and be able to check thousands of sites in a list without having to worry about monthly payments and so.

brokenlinkcheck(dot)com is a reliable and flexible tool to check the dead links or the broken links. This tool is also awarded by the web hosting search. You can get more tools when you search on the Google.

If any of your web site link is dead Google web master account will show you in errors link. From there easily you can track down dead links.
