I was thinking you get higher quality & relevance scores for PPC keywords when you do SEO for them as well, so I guess SEO in a way helps improve your quality scores and hence helps to reduce your ad costs?

PPC will not influence your PR or positioning in organic search results.

However, they can work together somehow:

If you get to have a paid ad and an organic listing on the same search results page, this will increase the organic traffic to your website.

The reason for that is the fact that the paid ad brings in credibility while the organic listing is considered more relevant.

That is why, the users are more attracted to click on your ads than on any other search result. Out of your 2 listings, in many cases, they will choose the organic one as it should offer the best pertinent information.

Google also gives priority to websites to rank better when there is an investment towards PPC. So its a generic idea that PPC and SEO works together in a more reflective and systematic manner.

see SEO and PPC are two different ways of promoting a website . in seo as we know we list our website in various search engines and we look after the site ranking in the search engine, by maintaining our site by looks , info, content, performance etc. and other things like submitting links of our site to other related sites. but in PPC which is called pay per click we pay for the as many as clicks, our site viewers click the site, and we pay for the ads we made in other sites, this is also a way of promoting the site, other ways are blogging , writing article about our site, joining forums, etc.

Seo and PPC are two different tasks which help to promote your website. SEO helps to drive the valuable traffic to your site and it will take many months to get the results and gather actionable data. In PPC you get the desired results quickly. This presents a valuable opportunity to improve and optimize your SEO.
