Please note that I'm not a lawyer, but it is my understanding that once the author has been dead for the required time, copyright expires and anyone can use the content. It is the reason I always expect to buy classic books for a really low price and refuse to pay normal book prices for them. I feel that the price should be low because I am really only paying for printing and publishing as there is no copyright on the text.

I know that anything older than 75 years is public domain.
