I have a question in my mind since when I am web mastering. I have not yet got a proper answer to it. The question is that how we can earn from websites.

See for example, I have a forum and I am holding lots of contest on it. I use all my money which I had in my paypal. But one day it will finish.
If we put ads on the forum, there are a lot of chances that members won't even click the ads. If we try to sell links, we need a good alexa rank and page rank also. I can't keep on holding contests without money. And to earn we need a proper traffic on it.

This was one example of a forum. So, reply with your thinking about it.

I guess the answer to your question depends on what kind of website that you have.

With regards to the forum business, try to look at this thread - How is forum running business?. From what I understand from that thread, I would say that it would take some time to generate traffic to your forum and increase it's members. It's only when your forum has become very popular that advertisers will seek you out and want to advertise with you.

Since you're just starting, I think you can ask the members of your forum to help click the ads in support of your site. I've also seen some forums that are asking for donations from it's members.

With most personal websites, I think the major source of revenue is with adsense or adbrite. For those offering free servers for MMORPG games like WOW and Ragnarok, they usually earn money by selling virtual currency/gold or elite equipments to those who donate to their servers. PTC and GPT sites' source of revenue are advertising and premium memberships and selling downline. Other websites run an online store where they sell either goods or services, or both.

I'm still pretty new with online business but this is what I've seen and read so far. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Try using adsense, or adwords on your websites. I think if you do put them up, you will eventually get people clicking on the ads.

Well mate earning is far too easy on the internet. All you need is some investments and you are good to go.

You can search google on how to monetize your site. It will help you for sure.

pankaj we will be able to provide you with more specific help if you provide us with some more details on the type of site you want to generate revenue from.

Do you own a forum, if so what subject area or niche is it in?

I try to learn how a website makes money, what it offers to the web visitors, and about the SEO . Also adsense placements and tweaking.

Ye, I agree with Fergal. We need more specifics about what kind of website you are making. For example, does it have a seperate forum? What are you building it with? What is unique about it?

Just to add on to the discussion - If the website owner has some products to sell that can also be done online through which you can earn. Increase your site's PR and make it rank well, you can sell ads space on your blog ranging from $25 till $150 per month depending on your website's quality!

One of the best way and common way is use Google Adsense. And you should be mentally clear that without a good advertisement nothing is possible so you must invest your money first on advertisement. As far your contents should be enriched and interesting. That's how you can collect most of the traffic. I know you've held the contest every week and that's really excellent but with lack of advertisement you don't have even less visitors to visit your website.

    I am running a webmaster forum i.e. 6nd.net
I need to setup it again as the backup has been lost with the hard disk by the host.

I also start genius-hackers.com which is running now.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you earn from genius-hackers and 6nd.net? Is your revenue only through advertising (google ads) pankaj? I don't see any google ads from both of your sites.

By the way, I've just noticed that the word "Advertisement" is spelled wrongly in your website. It shouldn't be spelled "Advertisment".

Pankaj, I'd suggest that you put some unobtrusive Adsense ads on both of those sites. I say unobtrusive because I think you need to be careful that you don't over commercialise the sites, to the extent that you drive visitors away.

In the short term, I wouldn't concentrate on revenue but would instead focus on building the number of visitors you get per day and on giving a good service to your visitors so that they want to keep returning.

Please keep us updated on how it is working out for you.

There are tons of ways to monetize a site. Talking about forums, add some Adsense ads in all pages to start with. If it doesn't go well, experiment with the placement of ads. The ads must blend in with the forum and at the same time must be clearly noticeable.

After a while, when you get a good Alexa rank and/or Google PR, you can start selling links. Sell links at considerable prices to begin with. DP would be the best place to get good prices for links on your site.

And like Fergal already said, right now, concentrate more on getting more quality users and building up a good user base than generating more revenue. Always remember, "Traffic + Quality Content = $$$$".

Oh and I just couldn't stop myself from making a comment about this:
NEVER ask the members or anyone else for that matter to click on the ads. Firstly it's against the TOS, and secondly it causes loss to the sponsors (and that would cause adverse effect on the publishers, which I wouldn't want to discuss about now and go off-topic).

Good luck with your new sites :)

Just to add to Shinobi's point, asking anyone to click on your ads is the quickest way to get both yourself and your site banned from an advertising network. You should never do this.

Maybe try selling Premium accounts. It worked for my friend. Putting a buffer of ads could help. Google doesn't charge if they aren't clicked, so you myswell put them up. That is my opinion anyway. If you don't like either of those, you could offer where users could create a contest for $1. =)

The premium account idea I think is good but what would distinguish it from a normal account that would make it worth the payment.

I think you should put some ads up as the others have said and see how they do, if it doesn't work then try something else.

Thanks for pointing out this bad advice of mine Shinobi. Talking about the adverse effects on the publishers wouldn't be totally off-topic in my opinion since it's still related to earning revenue from websites.

Premium Account or Sponsored membership is also available here in BAF. See this post for more information on this.

For me, a businessman in the medium business field, the website can make my work range wider, especially in the locations. I can give services to the people all along the world and expand my business.

Welcome the the Business Advice Forum Dean!

Yes, what you say is true but it's not only for those medium-scale business. This is also true for small and large businesses. With the Internet and having a website, we can reach out to consumers from all over the world, as long as they have an internet connection.
