I had hosting with Softlayer, a couple of months ago they sent me an email informing me they were terminating the facility that hosted my servers on June 16. With it I would have to order new service and then they would give me a discount on migration.

Okay so that's lame, the only reason I would have to order migration is because they want to make a change. So not only do I have to pay for migration, I also have to go through the pains of transferring my sites hosted at Softlayer. To compensate me they should at least pay for the full migration and if they wanted to be a good company comp me a free month for all the haste.

So I decided I did not want to do business with a company like that, I took my business elsewhere.

I just found out that not only did they cancel my service on June 16, which was fine I already made the change to another company, but they charged me again on June 24. Charging me even though they are providing no service?

When I asked them for a refund they told me that even they stopped service on June 16 I would still have to provide a cancelation notice. So they are trying to keep my money on a technicality?

Anyway, this is a simple breach of contract case. I am sure I will get my money back. The contract states that they supply me with a server and hosting and I give them money. Both sides get and give up something. There is no way they can simply stop providing me with the service in the contact and still receive payment. When you stop providing your end of the contact that is very simply called a breach.

It is just a pain to deal with low end support people who want to make things as difficult as possible. Just glad to be done with them!

How have you reached softlayer? Haven't heard of them anywhere.
You must have check whether they are in the business from time before availing the services of a company.

I am pretty sure Softlayer is the largest hosting company in the world, if they are not they are certainly one of them. Most other large hosting companies really have their servers hosted at Softlayer. For example hostgator gets all ther machines from Softlayer.

I haven't heard of them either although i own a web hosting business. I had serious issues with hosting companies also. Once they just lost all my website, all my work and everything. I was stupid because I didn't have backup. That is the reason why I decided to invest my time and money in my own hosting service. I get to make it better, from the consumer's point of view (my point of view ) and host my other sites with myself! :)) If you don't believe me, my business is called HyveHost (and can be found online at hyvehost.com ).
