The engineering department at my work also does snow removal. Since we were just bought out, everything has changed. We are still doing snow removal but all feel it is not worth it anymore. We no longer get overtime for it when we come in after hours. The whole department feels like this. What is the best way to deal with this

Welcome to our business forum j98tt.

What about being upfront with the department head? Explain that motivation in the department has fallen because of changes in overtime payments, made by the new owners.

When approaching management with an issue it is always best to give a suggestion as to how the issue can be resolved, to the benefit of the company. For example, you might tell the department head that the company will have more revenue and hence more profit from snow removal if they pay some overtime rates to the employees. You could also explain that the employees would also be more motivated in their jobs and less likely to look for work elsewhere.

The department head's main concern will most probably be about what's best for the department and for the company. You will get a much better response if you explain your concerns from that perspective, i.e. explain that giving an overtime allowance will help the company for the reasons mentioned above.

You can deal with the management if you think this is a big issue. It's always good to share your comments in a good way.

If it is creating the problem, try not to do over-pressure. The management committee should be checking the problem. Hence, this will help to report what problems are and what solution should be done.
