I have checked rankings for a specific keyword and it would appear we are much higher ranked on .com rather than .co.uk, so my questions are as follows.

How can i specifically target the .co.uk Google?
    Why would this happen?

Hmm. I never knew they used different systems for each of them. Whenever I type in google.com, it redirects me to google.ca... Could this possibly affect my rankings from .ca to .com?

the ranking is different from all the country extension. if you want to rank better on specified country such as .co.uk, then you gotta get more backlink from the site either hosted at UK or ip from Uk

Google will recognise a site as being from the UK if it is hosted in the UK or has a .co.uk domain name. Getting either of those should help your rankings on Google.co.uk.

Just target the market of the UK like if you are having the outbound baclinks then all these should be related from the UK. set your region UK in Webmaster Tools.

Just give it time. You should use Google.com.uk from this time on because you are promoting locally.

Yes, we can use Google webmaster account to choose the preferable target country, this is only applicable to .com domain. For localize domain like .co.uk, it is not flexible to choose target country, by default it is targeted .co.uk

Generally .co.uk or .com.uk is much more stronger for localize search, but it is not necessary, as per Sigma we can cover it by get more backlink from site either hosted at UK or ip from Uk.

    Fergal,

What about if I have a .co.uk and a .com domain? Currently the .co.uk redirects to .com. Does this make much difference?

Not sure if building backlinks from UK hosted sites will definitely be the answer to rank geologically since AFAIK domain extension don't matter, you can dominate both searches in .com and co.uk as long as you optimized your site thoroughly and have quality backlinks.

I guess below is the SERP hierarchy:

    1. Conversion rate, bounce rate, time on site, click through rate
    2. Quality content
    3. Quality link
    4. domain age
    5. PR
    6. domain ip
    7. exact domain name and domain extension.

Yes, it will be different. .co.uk is local search and .com is for international. If you want to target and have better rankings in google.co.uk you'll have to optimize locally. That means target websites that is hosted and for .co.uk which can be a little bit hard because it'll definitely slim down your lists of resources.
