    You can consider freelancer.com, odesk.com and elance.com
They are the top three freelancer site

you will need to actually compete with the hungry dogs in freelance sites like odesk and the rest if you are new to freelancing. its a dog eat dog world out there lolz you will require tons of great feedbacks to actually climb a single step.

fiverr actually is a good place to start though.

Yes the competition on these freelance websites is too much. I've not got a single reply from them as all the others bombard the employers with their previous experiences and stuff. It's just too tough to actually make your way in.

I agree these are the most reputable, and I've been wanting to do this for some time myself. The one question I have about it is how can you get the buyers to pick you from the others when everyone else already has immaculate rep on the site while you start off having 0?

Try 99designs.com. I know, you will work for nothing at begining, but you can build a nice portfolio.
And i believe this is better then biding against 100 freelancers with good reviews.
On freelancer or odesk, the biding system is not correct.
For a new guy is very hard to show what he can do (if he's good).

Sorry, now i've noticed that you are talking about writing.
Please contact me, i need something.

you will need to lower you bid. indians bid just about $2/hour. now you have to beat that just to get feedbacks, you can get even later when you have higher reps. and by the way, odesk provides exams, so just let your employers see your high score tests.

Slightly off topic, but what does that mean? And is that why Sigma (BAF member) has that username?

JPM, Six Sigma is a management strategy used by many Fortune 500 companies including General Electrical and you can read more about Six Sigma here on Wikipedia.

Fergal is right. Six sigma was recommended since motorola implement it but now most of the company are going for LSS (lean six sigma) rather than only six sigma alone. The reason is very simple because six sigma not working good enough on cost reduction.

I have used Odesk and earned well from it. Start low and build a reputation, so maybe do this while you are working another job. Then when the time is right you can work it full time. Pick the jobs you interview for wisely, as some people just take advantage of the low rates.

There are a lot of people on the site that don't really know what they're doing. So once you have a good reputation, put up your rates and act professional. You may still need to take the occasional low paid job, to keep the money coming in. But after a while you will have a selection of clients that pay well. It just takes time so don't expect to find them straight away.

Do these sites allow you to advertise your website also if you have one?

    How do you mean?

You can add a link to your profile. But Odesk has just writers, and businesses. The work is then published externally.

Say, for example I had a website where I advertised work, would odesk allow you to promote the site?
